The aim of our research is to identify the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota contributes to health. In this context, we are particularly interested in bacterial metabolites called short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs, acetate, propionate and butyrate). These molecules are generated by the fermentation of dietary fibers and play an important role in regulating host metabolism and immunity, being recognized as one of the microbiota-host interaction links.

The research activities undertaken at our laboratory aim to study the Biochemistry of trypanosomatids, especially Trypanosoma cruzi, with emphasis on their bioenergetics and antioxidant mechanisms. We also test potential compounds to develop a more specific and less toxic therapy for Chagas disease.

The main purpose of our laboratory activities is to investigate the mechanisms involved in endothelial dysfunction in cardiovascular disease and how these are influenced by chronic aerobic exercise training. In this context, we are particularly interested in vascular nitric oxide bioavailability, oxidative stress, inflammation and the perivascular adipose tissue.
