Exam guidelines

The entrance examination comprises of:

I. English exam

II. Analysis of the Curriculum Vitae and Transcripts of undergraduate and Master degree (for Ph.D. candidates)

III. Written exam containing descriptive and essay questions.

 

I. English exam

The aim of this exam is to assess the candidate’s ability to understand a text from specialized journals or scientific dissemination containing information related to the areas of concentration of the GP-GMB. Students are not allowed to use dictionaries. The questions are in English and the answers can be written in English. The grades will vary from 0 (zero) to 10 (ten), being 5 (five) the minimum required for approval. Candidates who do not meet the minimum (5) do not continue the selection process.

Native English speakers and students who submit one of the following (or equivalent) English proficiency certificates will be exempt from the English exam.

- Certificate: FCE - First Certificate in English (University of Cambridge - UK);

- Certificate: CAE – Certificate of Advanced English (University of Cambridge - UK);

- Certificate: CPE – Certificate of proficiency in English (University of Cambridge - UK);

- Certificate: TOEFL (minimum 550 points - paper-based - or 213 (computer based), 80 points - internet-based);

- Certificate: TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication);

- Certificate: IELTS - BRITISH COUNCIL (minimum: 6 - Overall Band).

II. Curriculum vitae and transcript analysis

Important:

- The Curriculum vitae should be formatted according to the Lattes CNPq instructions(link is external). Participation in conferences with oral presentations of papers or panels, articles, Scientific Initiation scholarships, participation in projects, internships and awards are among the relevant topics that will be evaluated. Include a checking copy of all titles and scientific production (unchecked items will not be considered).

- The transcripts must contain the name in full of all courses taken, including any failures and course withdraws by the candidate. The transcripts should be issued on paper with letterhead or stamp of the Higher Education Institution and signature of the person responsible for issuing the document. We will not accept transcripts in a "clean" format, containing only the final approval of the courses.

 

III. Written exams

The aim of this exam is to assess the candidate knowledge on the six different research areas of the GP-GMB (Animal Genetics and Evolution, Genetics of Microorganisms, Plant Genetics and Breeding, Microbiology, Immunology and Bioinformatics).

The written exam will be comprised of:

- Essay tests: One topic of each of the six research areas will be provided and the candidate will choose any of them. Assays will be graded from 0 (zero) to 2 (two). The candidate must provide a broad overview of the selected topic, including the most relevant aspects (maximum 48 lines).

- Descriptive tests: The student must answer five questions of her/his choice, out of a total of 30 questions (five from each research area). Questions will be graded from 0 (zero) to 1.4 (one point four), and the total of five question will therefore be graded from 0 to 7 (seven).

- Curriculum Analysis: Curriculum Vitae and Transcripts will be graded from 0 (zero) to 1 (one).

 

IV. Final Score

The final score is composed by the sum of the grades of the written exams and Curriculum vitae analysis.

Candidates with a score equal to or greater than 5 (five) in the English exam, and at least 6 (six) in the final score shall be deemed approved.
