Student Handbook

This small handbook was designed to guide students admitted to the master’s and doctor’s programs in Functional and Molecular Biology regarding their rights and duties.

The Committee for the Postgraduate Program in Functional and Molecular Biology (CPPG-BFM) welcomes everyone!

1. What are my duties?

Note: The enrollment, renewal, alteration or cancellation period is defined on the school calendar for Unicamp Postgraduate Programs, which is available on the DAC website (http://www.dac.unicamp.br/portal/pos/calendarios/).

According to the General Regulations of Unicamp, Chapter IV, §3 - Exceptionally, a student may enroll for a semester, without submitting, at the time of enrollment, a copy of a higher education certificate issued by a recognized institution, if the student submits a proof of undergraduate course completion, justified and endorsed by the Postgraduate Committee - CPG of that unit. The student will have his/her enrollment automatically canceled at the end of the semester if he/she does not submit this document.

Deadline to submit the annual report:

- Students admitted in MARCH: from January 4 to February 28 of every year.

- Students admitted in AUGUST: from June 1 to July 31 of every year.

2. What do I need to do to defend my dissertation/thesis?

  • Have the Credits described in the program regulations: total 24 Credits, of which 12 are mandatory and 12 are elective.

Note 1: The grid of disciplines for the semester is available on: http://www.ib.unicamp.br/pos_bfm/disciplinas.

Note 2: For disciplines of SPECIAL STUDENT/UNICAMP, the student may request to use the credit of studies (credit validation). In this case, the student should bring the academic records with the studied disciplines and the form with the credits to be analyzed by the coordination.

Note 3: The student with credits from the MASTER’S PROGRAM/UNICAMP should bring the academic records with the studied disciplines and the form with the credits to be analyzed by the coordination.

Note 4: The student with credits from the MASTER’S PROGRAM OF ANOTHER INSTITUTION should bring the academic records showing the studied disciplines, the discipline program, and the form with the credits to be analyzed by the coordination.

The form for credit analysis is available on DAC website: http://www.dac.unicamp.br/sistemas/formularios/template_formulario.php?pagina=aproveitamento_estudos_pos.php.

This form should be submitted to the CPG-IB in the period below:

- Student admitted in March: the form should be submitted up to November 1 of the admission year.

- Student admitted in August: the form should be submitted up to May 31 of the following year.

  • Take a language proficiency exam: make sure you have passed the admission exam or if there is any pending issue.

Note 1: The proficiency exam is taken on the selection exam date.

Note 2: A student who studied the MASTER’S PROGRAM IN ANOTHER INSTITUTION should submit, in max. 6 months after admission to a doctor’s program, his/her master’s program records including proficiency in a foreign language, and submit it to the CPG-IB for validation.

Note 3: The discipline of Experimental English will not be validated.

  • The student should take a qualification exam, which includes prior dissertation/thesis analysis.

Note 1: The request for a qualification exam requires the submission of the documents mentioned in the Program Regulations (Chapter VI – Activities of the Program, Art. 20 – the Qualification Exams for Master’s and Doctor’s Programs should observe Internal Rule nº 1 of the CPPG-BFM), including suggested names to comprise the examining committee.

Note 2: If a member suggested for the examining committee (qualification or defense) does not have an updated lattes résumé, the member’s résumé should be provided with an application for the examining committee.

3. What are my rights?

  • Registration suspended for max. 2 terms (semesters). Refer to Art. 18, General Rules of Unicamp.

Note: The students who foresee the possibility of exceeding 24/48 months for the defense may use these periods not to extend the total time of program completion.
